Packing Tips

How to pack a storage unit efficiently

  • Stack heavy, sturdy boxes on the bottom. Lighter boxes go on top. This protects fragile items and keeps everything stable.

  • Leave an aisle down the middle of your unit so you can reach items at the back without unloading everything.

  • Label boxes on the sides (not just the top) so you can read them when they're stacked.

  • Store items you'll need to access frequently near the front. Things you won't need for months go in the back.

  • Disassemble large furniture when possible to maximize space. Keep hardware in labeled bags taped to the furniture pieces.

  • Use your largest items (dressers, wardrobes) as natural shelves. Fill the drawers and interior spaces.

What NOT to store

  • Perishable food: anything that can rot, attract pests, or create odors.

  • Flammable liquids: gasoline, paint thinner, propane, and similar hazardous materials.

  • Living things: plants, animals (obviously), or anything alive.

  • Anything illegal: firearms, drugs, or items you don't have legal ownership of.

  • Irreplaceable items: important documents, irreplaceable photos. Keep these somewhere more secure.

When to choose climate controlled

  • Wood furniture: wood expands and contracts with temperature and humidity changes, leading to warping, cracking, and joint failure.

  • Electronics: heat and humidity degrade circuit boards, batteries, and screens over time.

  • Documents and photos: paper yellows and photos deteriorate in fluctuating temperatures and humidity.

  • Clothing and fabric: mold and mildew can form in high-humidity environments, especially on natural fibers.

  • Musical instruments: wood and metal instruments are particularly sensitive to environmental changes.

  • Antiques and collectibles: protect your investment with consistent climate control.
